The Wegner Health Science Information Center: The Library as a Place for Learning

Featured

The Wegner Center, as it approaches its twentieth anniversary, is recognized as a place for learning.  It is true that most of our scholarly resources are available online 24/7/365, and the library staff provide virtual research services to students, faculty and medical staff throughout the region. Nevertheless, students and other users from all the Wegner partners groups—Mt. Marty College, University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota State University, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, and the USD School of Health Sciences and Sanford School of Medicine—recognize and rely upon the Wegner Center as a place for learning.

The chart below depicts both the steady use of the Wegner classroom and the increased use of the study rooms. Hence, the Wegner Center Board of Directors continue to invest in the technology, furnishings, and more that make the Wegner Center a great place for learning.

d Note:  Fiscal Year (FY): July 1 to June 30

In June, the Wegner Center completed its latest renovations, including upgrading the classroom to a SMART classroom and installing new carpet throughout the center. These investments, made possible through the Lyndon and Shirley King Endowment, the Karl H. Wegner Health Science Information Center Endowment, the Sanford School of Medicine, and all the Wegner partner organizations, will ensure that the Wegner Health Science Information Center is a place for learning well into the future.

“PMC”

In searching PubMed and watching for “Free” articles, you’ll see the label “Free PMC Article” on many of them.freePMCarticle.png

PMC, formerly known as PubMed Central, is a repository for research funded by the National Institutes of Health and for other freely available journal articles.

It can be searched as a separate resource as well as via references retrieved in PubMed. Since (unlike PubMed) it is a repository of articles rather than a database of references to articles, a term searched in PMC retrieves articles that mention that term wherever it appears in the text of the article. That makes it useful when searching some obscure issues, for instance, cases of a certain microbe causing a certain problem –

Search PMC directly using the pull-down option at the top of the PubMed page to switch from PubMed to PMPubMed

PMClinkTypically, the PMC search on such a topic will retrieve more hits than in PubMed; some may be less focused, but since the text is immediately available, you can quickly open the article to check its content.

See a more detailed search interface at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/advanced and more description of PMC at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/about/intro/ and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/

Beware of Predatory Publishers

What are predatory publishers?

Predatory publishers attempt to scam authors into paying to have their work published and do not have a peer review or editorial board process to check the authority of the work.

Predatory publishers also tend to:

  • Have very similar or familiar sounding titles – typically they only differ by one or two words from a legitimate and reputable journal title
  • Published in an online-only format* (Note: not all open-access or online-only journals are predatory)
  • Prey on vulnerable populations (graduate students desperate to be published and/or hurried professionals who will soon be up for tenure or promotion)

Two ways predatory publishers make contact:

  • Unsolicited email
  • As part of internet search results

Tips to avoid being tempted or duped into publishing in a bogus journal:

  • Use the library databases and journal access provided by the University Libraries (I.D. Weeks and Wegner Center Libraries)
  • Conduct research using journal’s known in your profession and/or affiliated with a professional organization or society.
  • Still not sure? Librarians are happy to help.

To avoid predatory conference organizers, register for conferences and housing directly through a professional organization’s website, rather than emailed links.

Tips for Starting a Health Literature Search

Thorough searching on many topics in healthcare requires using both the Current Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature [CINAHL] as well as PubMed/Medline. Some searches are best started in CINAHL and then expanded into Medline/PubMed and others vice versa.

CINAHL

CINAHL is best when searching for:

  • Procedures of care
  • Publications in the fields of respiratory care, emergency medical terminology and laboratory management
  • New phrases which may be found only in the article body (“quadruple aim” for example)

Additionally, subject headings used to tag articles in CINAHL are often more specific for processes such as Diabetes Education, Gait Analysis, Back Exercises, or Insertion Site Selection.

1200px-us-nlm-pubmed-logo-svg

PubMed/Medline is best when searching for:

  • Drug trials
  • Specifics of disease diagnosis and treatment

CINAHL search tips:

  • Expand relevant references in your query by selecting “Also search within the full text of the article” in the Advanced Search option.
  • Expand your search to additional EBSCO databases, including Medline, by selecting the “Choose Databases” link at the top of the search page.

From the Dean of Libraries

Vicki PhotoIn October 2016, the board, staff, and friends of the Wegner Health Science Information Center wished Vicki Carlson, Operations Manager, the best as she embarked on retirement. Vicki began her career in libraries in the Canton, SD, school district. She later joined the University of South Dakota library staff that served both the Sioux Valley Hospital and the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Vicki continued her service with the University of South Dakota upon the opening of the Wegner Health Science Information Center in 1998.

Between 1998 and her retirement in 2016, Vicki adapted to and helped shape many changes in library services at the Wegner Center, and her commitment to excellence was a constant throughout all the changes. Her commitment to her colleagues and library users was always evident. She is missed by colleagues and library patron alike.

Best wishes, Vicki, as you enjoy time with family and friends.

Access Wegner Library Online Resources Anywhere

All employees, students and faculty associated with Wegner Library partner institutions can get a free Wegner Library username/password to access Wegner Library’s online databases, online journals and e-books from any internet connection, as long as a firewall doesn’t prevent it.

When clicking on individual links for databases, journals or eBooks on the Wegner Library Web site, a Web page will appear asking for the a username and password before content (i.e. full-text of journal articles, books, databases) is accessed.

To obtain a username/password:

  • Complete a Remote Access Request form in person, online or request one by email or phone (357-1400).
  • Select a password that follows USD guidelines:
  • at least 8 characters long (may not contain any part of the person’s name)
  • contain a capital letter, a lowercase letter AND a number or a symbol
  • Chose a password not related to the library or the institution’s name—for example, Physics1905!

Requests are processed as received. Once completed, an email will be sent stating the password is active.

 More Tips:

USD and SSOM clinical faculty, residents, students and staff use their USD username and password (same as their USD email) and do not need a Wegner Library username and password. Contact the USD IT department (605-658-6000 or 1-877-225-0027) for assistance with USD usernames and passwords.

Wegner Library usernames and passwords do not expire unless a student graduates from a partner institution’s program or an employee leaves a partner institution. The library, however, is open to the public and so an individual can always access library materials by physically visiting the library.

Reset your Wegner Library password @ https://guest.usd.edu/sites/accounts/reset/default.aspx.
